MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — It may not have felt like it lately, but spring planting season is here. For months, a farm in the east metro, run by the Minnesota Food Association, has been preparing and training a new generation of farmers.
May Lee came to the Minnesota Food Association five years ago to learn how to farm.
“You get the food that you like … and all is fresh,” Lee said.
The program focuses on training immigrant and minority farmers.
The Executive Director, Glen Hill toured the 120 acres in the Wilder Forest near Stillwater.
“We want more local farmers producing quality, good food that makes it available to people in our community,” Hill said.
Beyond support in growing, farmers are taught marketing and sales skills to make their business’s work.
May is now teaching what she’s learned to other members of the Hmong community. She says it’s a skill that she’s happy to pass on.
The Minnesota Food Association also offers community supported agriculture to customers. It will host an open house on Sunday, May 15.
You’ll find information about it on their website.

"All the vegetables have been so clean and beautifully bundled and packed, and the variety has been very good. We love the basil this year and the potatoes as well as all the greens and root veggies so far.

Since starting out as a hobby farm, Mhonpaj's Garden has grown to be a thriving family farm. We credit our success to the Minnesota Food Association, a non-profit that supports the growth and viability of small minority farms, and the wonderful people that have continued to provide guidance to us.
This year's addition to the farm was greenhouses and four additional acres of organic land.
